Cell phones and families: Boundaries in a high technology world

What is appropriate cell phone use at mealtime and what is not?
Different families have different boundaries and rules for using cell phones at mealtime. Many kids will want to continue their texts, check their emails, write emails or check their Facebook or Instagram during breakfast or dinner. Traditionally, mealtime has been a time for families to connect and relate to one another. It might be the only time in a day that the family members are together and doing the same thing, eating. This type of together time has increasingly diminished in North American families.
Cell phone use can definitely impede on the availability and connection that families need to maintain a close, informed and open relationship with one another. If one child is texting a friend, while another child is just trying to pass the next Candy Crush level, and someone else is busy photographing the meal for Instagram before anyone can tuck in, they are not really engaged with each other. Full focused attention to each other is a rarity and made even harder to achieve when you are waiting for a ping that indicates a message has been delivered to your “in” box.
Some children will take their lead from their parents. If it is ok, for the adult to receive calls, then the child may assume it is also ok for them to receive calls or do other things with their phones. Cell phones are a wonderful way for kids to connect with their peers. The phone becomes their lifeline to all that is happening around them. Therefore, many adolescents will try to push back on family rules by asking for a special allowance “just this one time” or insisting it is there right to use their phone when they want to use it. Well defined, consistent rules with distinct consequences that can be followed by all members of the family will be helpful in curbing the conflict around cell phone use at mealtimes.
Do you agree that there should be some cell phone free time within a day for people to connect in person?

Please share if your family has a plan that works and how you arrived at this plan?

  2. I really need your help and I hope I can get you to publish this message… for a while. I have no idea how long it will take for people to put my family in touch with me. I did reach my cousin Philip Noordeberg, their brother but due to the nature of the affliction he refused to help his sisters. The affliction deteriorates the bodies and minds of the afflicted and causes them to become disabled. Apparently it’s the disability that has caused many financial issues and that the sisters and brother lives are in turmoil. But they can be helped. My family had it and I had to search the world for treatments and found it. So I can save their lives. The danger is that as they have been so long without treatment, permanent damage may have occurred. The kids though can be completely treated. I was living in Asia and the Middle East and I spent 20 years on line, directory assistance and searching for them. Philips reaction saddened me but it’s understandable, I suppose.. I need your compassion to help me reach these people. There is much work to be done. I believe that they live in the NDG area.
    ..Thank you.

    • I am looking for my cousins who live in Montreal. I have looked for them for 20 years. The situation is fairly urgent. The family has a genetic issue and it leads to incredible pain and suffering. Other members who have this have had very difficult and challenging lives. There is a bit of conflict, I was able to reach one family member, who outlined that his sisters and brother had indeed experienced the family legacy and were suffering. But he also indicated that due to the disease that the family had inherited, he was estranged from them and would not or could not contact them. I waited another year, hoping that he would find them. Or that compassion would open his heart to allow me to get treatment to my cousins who have no idea of the nature of the affliction. It gets worse over age and after 20 years of hunting of them, time is of the essence. I was told that they don’t use social media and live simple lives. But someone out there must know them. I have treatments for the family especially the kids. Their lives can be saved.
